Presentation of the site or hunting zone
The Comoé-Léraba Gazetted Forest and Partial Reserve of Fauna is located in South-Western Burkina Faso, at about 530 Km of OUAGADOUGOU the country capital. It borders with Côte dIvoire. Contrary to what one could expect and perhaps fear, the socio political crisis in this neighbouring country has not disturbed the management of our reserve or hunting. The hunting season 2004-2005 was conducted without difficulties and hunters were satisfied.
The reserve covers a total surface area of about 125,000 ha. Mid-way between the Sahel and dense humid forest, the dominant vegetation is savannah woodland. However, the zone is also characterized by riverine grassy flood plains and thick forest islands and galleries along the two perennial rivers: the Comoé and its affluent the Léraba. The area possesses numerous natural pools and salt licks which gives a good distribution of fauna in the central part of the reserve which has been chosen as hunting area.
The hunting camp and its particularity
Two types of standard camps are proposed to hunters:
The permanent village camp: One-hour drive to the hunting area, located at the outskirt of the Folonzo village, it is built with permanent materials and include four (O4) ventilated rooms with minimum furniture (table, chair and cupboard) and toilets. It possesses a kitchen and storage rooms. Solar electricity allows the use of computer facilities (laptop, numeric camera, etc.). The village ambiance and kindness of villagers allows hunters who want during free times to mingle with inhabitants and perhaps, to share in the cosmogony of traditional hunters through various dances and songs.
The bush camp: constituted of 3 bungalows with permanent materials. It is rustic and adapted to enthusiasts of nature. At the heart of the hunting area, the camp is constructed in the centre of a forest island, the Guibourtia copalifera unique in Burkina Faso, along the Comoé River. This camp offers heavenly field to the hunter where everyday the morning dew raises more the evanescence perfume of flowers. In free times, possibility is given to the hunter to relax while observing birds or fishing. The Comoé River is particularly rich in fish species including lates niloticus (Nile perch) with some reaching 50kg.

Hunting method
Hunting is practiced on foot by chance encounters, tracking and approaches. The objective is to approach our skittish game as near as possible for security and successful shots. Tracking starts as soon as the first fresh tracks are found by our experienced trackers. Hunting in the Comoé-Léraba is far to be childs game, but for experienced and sportive hunters. To succeed and collect an animal, one must be prepared to walk long distances while always in alert. Hunting is allowed from 6:00 Am to 6:00 Pm. It is strictly prohibited to hunt in night.
Hunting season
Organized in the dry season, hunting is open from December 1st to May 31st. December to February are the most pleasant with temperatures oscillating between 25° to 30° by day, and from 12° to 18° at night. But the grass is still high and management fires ongoing. From March, the temperatures increase a little and can reach until 36°. Wildlife tends to concentrate near the rivers.
